Chapter 9

-Teresa-

There I was, minding my own business, climbing up onto a truck so I could clear it when suddenly Marcus lifted me off my feet.

Like way off my feet.

Firstly, I’d had everything under control. Just a few more inches and I would have been able to reach the center of the windshield.

Secondly, did his fingers really circle that much of my waist? And I was in a coat!

Thirdly, I suddenly realized where my backside must be hovering.

Just what every woman wanted, a guy giving her derriere an up close and personal inspection. Too bad I didn’t have gas, that would show him.

I shoved that thought out of my brain and moved on to the final problem. He’d lifted me higher than I’d been before.

My brothers had often picked me up in order to physically get rid of me, so wiggling to get free came naturally.

Maybe I should have repressed the urge to escape from Marcus’ grasp. For a moment I relived that “I’m the king of the world” moment in Titanic, then I turned one way and Marcus’ hands went another, and the world tilted, and then I was free falling.

And yes, the 80’s song did go through my head, thank you very much.

For a moment I hung in midair, as if the world had been paused and I’d been given the time to observe what was happening around me.

Fluffy, perfect flakes of snow fell like tiny velvet pillows. One of them landed on my lips, and I tasted cold and salt. The air hung still like a long hot day in summer, except if I stayed here I’d freeze. I marveled at the fact that I’d somehow ended up parallel to the pavement.

Marcus broke the spell, uttering a word his foul-mouthed mother would totally say in public to embarrass everyone. I let out a squeal of what I would later call surprise—really, it was terror—and then the ground came rushing up to meet me.

I braced for impact, already expecting exploding pain in my back or head, or both.

Too bad someone had shoveled around us. Eighteen inches of snow would have cushioned the blow nicely.

Instead of smacking into the concrete, I fell onto something soft. Ish. It grunted.

The only thing around that would make that noise was Marcus.

I’d just landed on Marcus.

Butt first.

Wait, where was my butt? Where was his head?

My brain drew unflattering pictures of what might be happening, and I decided that I could die right then and be fine with it.

Marcus moaned.

It seemed the universe refused to grant me the mercy of death. I flailed a few times and found myself high-centered on Marcus. When I attempted to roll off his arm came up and stopped me. When I tried the other direction another arm arrived to cage me.

“What are you doing?” I asked in a shrill voice. My apprehension about where my body was in respect to his evaporated, and I sat up.

“Teresa!” Marcus barked before it sounded like all the air whooshed from his lungs.
